POKOTABI / Sushi Noike
すし 乃池
Beloved in Tokyo's Yanaka neighborhood, Sushi Noike is renowned for simmered conger eel nigiri. From eight-piece platters of tender anago to braised liver and boxed sets, here is what defines this classic Edomae shop.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step through the noren curtains at Sushi Noike, and the first order of business is almost certainly the specialty that built its reputation: anago nigiri. An eight-piece platter of simmered conger eel demonstrates meticulous preparation, completely free of noticeable pin bones, with tender meat that yields delicately the moment it touches the tongue. The simmered glaze is understated and lightly sweet, highlighting the natural richness of the eel against the balanced sushi rice.
While anago is the centerpiece, lingering over small drinking bites is equally rewarding. Appetizers include richly savory simmered conger eel liver, sliced anago served with wasabi and sweet sauce, and tuna nuta in sweet-sour miso sauce. These pair naturally with chilled sake such as Kokuryu Daiginjo or Kiyomizu Tokubetsu Junmai. For diners wanting variety, nigiri assortments provide flexibility: the Tokujo set includes either one or three pieces of eel, while a specialized Tokujo nigiri platter offers five pieces.
The calm dining room provides counter seating alongside tables, making it comfortable for solo diners as well as groups at both lunch and dinner. Boxed conger eel sushi is prepared for takeout and gifts, making this an easy and satisfying stop while exploring Yanaka.
